Childhood Obesity is becoming a rising health concern in the Caribbean. The adoption of a more western diet coupled with reduced levels of physical activity have contributed significantly to this phenomenon.
Obesity prevalence was 13.9% among 2- to 5-year-olds, 18.4% among 6- to 11-year-olds, and 20.6% among 12- to 19-year-olds. Childhood obesity is also more common among certain populations.
To help fight the good fight, the Rotaract Club of Gros Islet joined forces with the Rotaract Club of St Lucia to raise awareness of this health concern in local primary schools. We reached out to Ms. Nadege Atkins, former teacher with a masters in Public Health, to create an interactive presentation for the children.
